New Zealand Proposes Revisions to Maximum Residue Limits for Agricultural Compounds in Various Foods
On 20 October 2026, New Zealand submitted WTO notification G/SPS/N/NZL/796, proposing amendments to the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds. Issued under the Food Act 2014, the Notice establishes maximum residue levels (MRLs) for agricultural compounds in New Zealand. The proposed changes cover amendments to existing entries, the addition of new MRL entries, the removal of an entry for a compound no longer authorised for use in New Zealand, and the introduction of a new Schedule 4. The deadline for comments is 19 December 2026. The proposed adoption and entry-into-force dates have not yet been determined. The main proposed amendments are as follows.

Sri Lanka Proposes Amendments to the Product Standard for Ceylon Cinnamon
On 15 October 2026, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) published Draft Amendment No. 1 to the Sri Lanka Standard Specification for Ceylon Cinnamon (SLS 81:2021, Fifth Revision) for public consultation. Comments are due by 13 December 2026. The proposed amendments primarily concern the definitions of cinnamon quills and bales and the maximum limit for lead. The document remains a draft and should not be treated as an effective Sri Lankan standard. The main proposed amendments are as follows:

Japan Proposes Revisions to Maximum Residue Limits for Five Pesticides in Certain Foods
On 21 October 2026, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) published a draft amendment to the Specifications and Standards for Foods, Food Additives, etc., proposing revisions to the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for five pesticides, including chlorantraniliprole, in certain foods. Health Canada Completes Novel Food Safety Assessment of Rhiza Mycoprotein
On 14 September 2026, Health Canada published the results of its novel food safety assessment of Rhiza Mycoprotein. The product consists of non-viable, dehydrated mycelial biomass derived from a non-genetically modified environmental isolate of Neurospora crassa. It is intended for use as an alternative protein source and a source of dietary fibre in meat, poultry, seafood, meat alternative, and dairy analog products.

On 20 October 2026, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published Gazette No. 21, proposing amendments to Schedule 20, Maximum Residue Limits, of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. U.S. Proposes to Shorten HPAI-Related Import Restrictions for Birds and Avian Products

EU Publishes Final SCCS Opinion on the Safety of Heliotropin in Cosmetic Products
On 15 October 2026, the European Commission published the final version of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) Opinion SCCS/1688/26 on the safety of Heliotropin used in cosmetic products. The opinion was formally adopted by written procedure on 12 October 2026 and assesses the safety of Heliotropin (CAS No. 120-57-0; EC No. 204-409-7) as a cosmetic ingredient.
